sc20116Seen in hindsight, the supreme irony of the history of Western civilization is that the antebellum South, although being geographically far away from continental Europe, had been far more successful in preserving the ancient European code of honor and the sense of the tragic than Europe itself. Much of what many European conservatives or traditionalists like to hearken back to had already been violently removed in Europe by liberal and communist revolutions that had swept over Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Pro-Southern Instinct in the Loyalist Tradition

SPF273There is, of course, a long tradition in my country of sympathy for the South. Our own Confederation – note the similarity in the term used for the union of the provinces of British North America into the Dominion of Canada to that chosen by the Southern states after secession – occurred in 1867, two years after General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. The triumph of the North in the American internecine war was the catalyst for the Confederation of Canada. Only five decades previously the United States had failed in an attempt to conquer British North America, they had declared their “Manifest Destiny” to rule all of North America, and now, the side that Britain and its North American provinces had openly sympathized with, had lost. Confederation was considered a prudent move to ward off another invasion by Yankees drunk with their own victory over their Southern brethren. Continue reading

Harmony, Order and Inequality

193781The Southern social order and the traditional structure of the broader plantation civilization to which the South belonged was based upon harmony and order. It sought to avoid antagonism and competition between groups by embracing the natural order ordained by God. In contrast, the “free everything and anti-every school” of bourgeois egalitarians who prevailed in the North and much of Western Europe believed that “when society is wholly disintegrated and dissolved, by inculcating good principles and ‘singing fraternity over it,’ all men will cooperate, love and help one another.” Southern philosopher and sociologist George Fitzhugh (1806-1881) of Virginia wrote that the bourgeois elements of Modernity “place men in positions of equality, rivalry, and antagonism, which must result in extreme selfishness of conduct, and yet propose this system as a cure for selfishness.” Continue reading

The rest of South America have no respectable or durable governments, because they need the clay that kings are made of, and have not sufficient virtue and intelligence to sustain republican governments. We write this for the special benefit of New-England. When she quits the Union, and is annexed to Canada, we advise her, by all means, to get Victoria and Prince Albert to procure one of their poor German royal cousins to rule over them. They have hundreds of such cousins, any one of whom would make a better king than the wealthiest and most enlightened member of the codfish aristocracy.

We dwell upon this subject of the Divine hereditary right of kings, because it is one of pressing and practical importance to every owner of lands and slaves, to every owner of real property, or of property of any sort, in America. Continue reading
